Environmental Education

Imagine Haitian regularly offers short environmental seminars focused on reforestation. Whenever possible, the seminars conclude by offering each of the attendees a nursery-grown tree to plant in their yards and to serve as an inspiration for starting their own nurseries.

In the spring of 2009, Imagine Haitian  worked with the leaders of Eben-Ezer Mission, a local agronomist, and a local youth group to offer a 10-week environmental education course.

The course topics included:

  • the history and consequences of Haitian deforestation
  • the cycling of essential plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.)
  • the hydrologic cycle
  • sustainable food production
  • causes of and solutions to water pollution
  • causes of and solutions to air pollution
  • local and global climate change

In addition to theoretical studies in the classroom, the course included practical work in the field, such as tending the mission’s tree nursery and learning how to use water purifiers and biodiesel stoves. Eben-Ezer Mission continues this work through field seminars focused on the construction and maintenance of tree nurseries.
