Tree Nurseries
ImagineHaitian.org is working with Eben-Ezer Mission of Gonaives to establish several tree nurseries and plantations. We are cultivating oil-producing trees, such as jatropha and castor, to launch our pilot biofuels project.
In addition, we are cultivating a variety of multi-purpose trees to aid reforestation efforts in and around Gonaives. Reforestation is a critical step in preventing future disasters such as the catastrophic flooding caused in 2004 by Hurricane Jeanne and in 2008 by Hurricanes Hanna and Ike.
In choosing our tree species, we give preference to species that are native to Haiti. In addition, we seek trees that offer a variety of uses, including food, medicine, and lumber. Our species include: annona muricata, annona squamosa, cassia grandis, chrysophylum cainito, cordia alliodora, guaiacum officinale, swietenia mahagoni, and tecoma stans.
